Photograph: Spavor Family Handout/Reuters Canadian citizen Michael Spavor has expressed joy at being reunited with his family after being released from jail in China last week. “I’m overjoyed to be finally reunited with my family. It’s humbling as I begin to understand the continued support that we’ve received from Canadians and those around the world, thank you,” Spavor said on Friday in a first statement since his release. Businessman Spavor and Canadian former diplomat Michael Kovrig were released last week after being detained by Chinese authorities just days after Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou’s arrest in Vancouver in December 2018. They were released within hours of Meng reaching a deal with US prosecutors to end the bank fraud case against her, after being held for more than 1,000 days. Beijing has denied that their arrests were linked.https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/oct/02/im-overjoyed-canadian-michael-spavor-speaks-out-after-china-release
“They’re often doing jobs that involve contact with other disadvantaged groups, people with disability, people in aged care. We knew this before Covid started.” Local health districts are a considerably larger area compared to local government areas. For example, the south-western Sydney local health district stretches from the Sydney suburbs of Fairfield, Liverpool and Bankstown, to Bowral, south of Sydney. However, most Covid cases in the health district have predominantly been recorded in the more disadvantaged, culturally diverse areas of Canterbury-Bankstown, Liverpool and Campbelltown. Western Sydney is a similarly sprawling health district, with boundaries from Auburn in the south, to Blacktown, and the more affluent Hills Shire in the north. While it is diverse, it includes pockets of high disadvantage, and cases have been concentrated in the more disadvantaged Blacktown and Cumberland local government areas. Combined, south-western and western Sydney local health districts have a population of about 1.8 million people. SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WLS) -- In the battle over COVID vaccine mandates, Governor JB Pritzker is quietly working behind the scenes to revise a law some groups are invoking to try and avoid the requirement. The Health Care Right of Conscience Act bans discrimination by public or private institutions "because of such persons conscientious refusal to receive...or participate in any way in any particular form of healthcare services contrary to his or her conscience." RELATED: Pres. Biden visits Elk Grove Village to promote COVID vaccine mandates The Fraternal Order of Police, who have led the fight in Chicago against Mayor Lori Lightfoot's COVID vaccine mandate for all city employees, are among those looking to use this loophole. "At face value, it's usable," said FOP president John Catanzara. "I mean, it literally says if you have a firmly held religious belief, a firmly held conscientious belief, against a medical procedure, you are covered by that statute. Period." LEARN MORE: What to know about religious exemptions for COVID shots as vaccine mandates roll out But the ACLU of Illinois said the intent of the law was to protect medical providers from being forced to do things like perform abortions or provide contraceptives contrary to religious beliefs. "No one ever contemplated that this would be used in a fashion where an individual would be able to opt out of care, of a service, and then collect protection under the right of conscience," said Ed Yohnka, ACLU of Illinois. "The Health Care Right of Conscience Act was never intended to allow people to avoid public health guidance during a global pandemic. The administration supports efforts to clarify the law, so it cannot be misinterpreted by fringe elements," said Emily Bittner, Deputy Chief of Staff for Governor JB Pritzker, in a statement.https://abc7chicago.com/illinois-covid-vaccine-mandate-health-care-right-of-conscience-act-jb-pritzker-fraternal-order-police/11113439/
Last week, NSW became the first state to reach the initial 70% double vaccination target. Other states are expected to reach that number in the coming weeks, and by the end of the year the entire country is expected to open up. But experts warn it's not without potential dangers -- and some people are bearing more of the risk than others. Australia's reopening plan is built around total adult vaccination rates in each state, but inoculation statistics are not evenly spread. In some suburban areas of Sydney, full vaccination rates are as low as 30%, according to government figures. The state's Indigenous population is also trailing statewide numbers. For example, as of October 6, fewer than half of Indigenous people aged 15 or over on the NSW Central Coast had received both vaccine doses. That's a problem because Indigenous people generally suffer more chronic health issues than non-Indigenous people, putting them at greater risk of Covid complications. And young people are also of concern. In NSW, only 58% of people age 16 to 29 have been fully vaccinated -- the lowest of any age group besides 12 to 15-year-olds, who were only recently given access to vaccines.
